A my friend Tricia is teaching a free mixed media class over at Skillshare. As a favor to her, I signed up. I could use the inspiration. I know I could be working on Mission Inspiration or Tim Holz Tags but it didn’t happen in April. Instead, I spent my time organizing my craft room. I’m hoping that having a clean, organized space will lead to more productivity. At the very least, it will lead to finished projects even though I still haven’t found what I was looking for when I decided I needed to sort my room.
Anyway, back to the class. I’ve watch the first few videos. I’ve got the blahs but I couldn’t stop thinking about applying color to paper. I have these Craypons oil pastels that I believe I bought before I got pregnant. My son turned 19 in March. So at the very least, the pastels are 20 years old. They practically look brand new.
Imagine my delight as I began my play. I actually had to peel some of the paper off my pastels because I had used up the tips. It’s exciting because I am creating instead of hording.
These pages I hope to use as the base for Tricia’s class. I want to share the technique since Tricia shares gelatos on her video.
Since Craypas are the only oil pastels I use, I can’t compare them to other oil pastels. I’m thinking I should probably invest. However, please note that what I share may not apply to other brands.
Craypas color much like crayons. You can’t see in the picture but the red (blurry) areas were colored and then rubbed with a paper towel while the orange areas have not. The texture of those areas look identical to crayon drawing – there’s white space in the gaps where the “paint” lays on top of the texture of the paper.
Once I have all of a color applied, I used a paper towel scrunched up and rub it across the color. If you rub outside of the “lines” you get that blurry effect. If you place a color right next to it, that blurry area becomes a blended area. These oil pastels don’t blend much after they have been rubbed which is nice when laying down color like this.
I finished applying my dots which I hope will look like flowers in a field (abstract). You can see I started to lay down the green before I remembered to take a picture.
Because I am laying the green around the other colors, I work in batched – coloring then blending. As you can see my dots are still rather crisp – they have not been washed out by the green. I did color around the dots but in blending I rubbed up against and over the dots.
My finished piece. I did add some black centers and then wasn’t sure how I felt about them. The colors end up rather pastel vs the bright colors they start with but I like the effect.
When I finish a piece, I take a larger surface of my paper towel (I start with a ball about the size of my finger and then use a ball about twice that size) and rub over the entire page. This blends any left over pastel sitting on the surface of the paper. There is little transfer so my colors stay true.
Two other backgrounds. I don’t know which I will choose or what I will do with them but I have a start.
Now Tricia’s class focuses on using a poem for your piece. I thought about that and finding a poem began to be stressful. I had colors in mind so how do I reconcile that with a poem. I couldn’t. I realized that not having a poem is not a deal breaker. I can still make art. My art will just be different from hers. No matter what I made, it would still be different so no worries there. I got to play and I am inspired. What more do I need?
